We could also go with
/etc/network/interfaces.new
and have an on-boot script that renames it to
/etc/network/interfaces
if the latter doesn't already exist. This way users who are starting fresh with 2.1.0 don't have to be aware of this legacy stuff but users who are upgrading from 2.0.x get their old config preserved-but-ignored until they manually intervene.
