Perhaps ceate a version of the firmware that has everything except the breaking changes in it so people who are in situation where they cannot have the network go down can upgrade at least that far, then create a follow-on version that has the breaking changes and is CLEARLY marked for those who are ok with network setting changing? Or is there a way to inject/hardcode at a minimum basic network settings (IP, mask, gateway) as part of the upgrade?
