As some people may know, the Pi people made a version of the Raspberry Pi 4 chip that is installed on a CM3 compatible SODIMM-200 board. Came out late last year with the usual 1GB of memory and there was talk that they would also release 2,4,and 8gb memory versions.
I did buy one on Ebay with 1gb memory and yes they work, they work well, they are much faster than the 3+ units, but of course the big problem is they only have a Gb of memory so they tend to hit swap hard when doing anything interactive. The other issue is they only have 100mbps Ethernet (boo!) so that's always going to be a bit of a choke point.
In March, Newark electronics had the 8gb memory 32gb storage ones on backorder, so I ordered a pair of them for $75 or so each and forgot about it. Part number is: cm4s080032
They just arrived.
Yes, they have a true 7.8gb of memory. Yes, they do work in my TPi 1, yes they are blazing fast, and yes this is a significant game changer for this board. Now I can finally run real memory intensive applications and maybe a full install of K8s.
So if you have a Turing Pi 1 and want to boost up the cluster to some real memory amounts, it's possible.
The next thing I'm going to try to find is a pair of these with 0gb of disk space so I can use them as my bitcoin node and internal SAN (both running 2tb SDHC cards). If anyone has a lead on this model let me know 🙂
